I think - for the centralized and standardized plugin depository -, ask the developers. If there is will, there is a way, you know; but it may hurt some people’s interest – as it happened already in the case of http://wp-plugins.net/ as there are 2 plugin central now.
I hope nobody will ‘kill’ the other because of this, and able to come to an agreement.
As for the community’s interest, one standardized plugin central would be the best solution.
Write for e.g. to Matt ( http://photomatt.net/ ) in this matter, he may responds.
But before think over the whole conception.

Yes, and that’s one big problem with my PlugInstaller plugin. As there is no “mandatory” plugin repository, but plugins are scattered around the web in a more or less organized way, many features of PlugInstaller that would be great to have are virtually impossible. It’s always a compromise.

I have contacted the author of the FCKeditor plugin you recommended, but he hasn’t answered yet…

This was a learning curve for both of us that there are lots of plugins outside from WP official website too, and need to do an extensive search before anybody do anything in the matter of plugins.

Thanks for the tip! I searched the wordpress.org plugin repository for “FCKeditor” but did not find such a plugin. I will contact the author in the next days, maybe I can contribute to his deveopment. Doesn’t really make much sense to have two plugins that do exactly the same
